Marta Martinez, Café Recuerdos
Marta is a Community Oral Historian. Café Recuerdos grows directly out of their work collecting oral histories across Rhode Island’s Latino communities. It takes those recorded stories beyond the archive and brings them into public spaces, where they continue to live through conversation. Over a simple cup of coffee, people are invited to share memories, reflect, and add their voices to a growing collective history. In this way, Café Recuerdos becomes a living extension of the archive—where storytelling is not only preserved, but actively created and shared.
Café Recuerdos will be at Farm Fresh, just outside New Harvest Coffee Roasters (10 Sims Avenue in Providence). It will sit alongside Somos Rhode Island, portraits by René Gómez, and together they create a space that feels familiar—like you’ve stepped into a story. After the event, during each weekend in May, someone from RILA will be there to collect a memory, write something down, and record your voice, or simply sit and talk with you. However you choose to participate, it becomes part of something larger. There will be coffee! A special cafecito blend, made just for this.
